On the morning of October 23, four members of our transportation department volunteered to teach bus safety to our youngest students at MED. Bus mechanic/substitute driver Wally Engel,
retired driver, substitute driver/bus attendant, and driver trainer Wanda Gawron,
bus driver/driver trainer Miranda Trowbridge, and bus driver/driver trainer Carrie Sharpe visited each classroom in pre-k, kindergarten, and 1st grade to discuss safety on and off the bus. They led presentations that students eagerly participated in and gave each student a grade-appropriate workbook and other handouts to remind them of important bus safety points. Just a few of the points shared by our drivers were how to properly and safely enter, exit, and ride the school bus, where to stand at a bus stop, how to safely cross a roadway, and what to do in case of an emergency.
This transportation department initiative was held in conjunction with School Bus Safety Week (October 21-25) and the three school bus drills our drivers perform with students throughout the school year.
