Fifth graders in Mrs. Reichardt's science classes recently investigated whether plants take in carbon dioxide to live and grow. In this experiment, they used bromothymol blue solution (BTB) in one tube, BTB with carbon dioxide in another tube, and BTB with carbon dioxide and an aquatic plant in a third tube to test whether plants take in carbon dioxide. After 24 hours under a heat lamp, students observed and discovered that plants do take in carbon dioxide based on the evidence that our aquatic plants turned a blue-green color!
